The United Nations is an international pile of self-righteous bureaucrats established after World War II that's now trying to become World Government.

Background

The United Nations was founded with the intention of fostering peace and international cooperation. Arguably it has failed in this respect, and many criticisms of the UN as a threat to the sovreignty of nations hold some merit. The failed precursor to the Untied Nations was the League of Nations which the US did not joined. The League of Nations was formed after World War one.

Security Council

The United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China are the five permanent members of the Security Council. An additional ten seats are filled by other nations on a rotating basis. The five permanent member states are the most prolific arms dealing nations in the world, which is a sad commentary on the effect rather than intentions of globalism.

Problems

For Libertarians, and strangely enough Nationalists as well. The UN poses a clear threat to the sovreignty of nations, and there are laws and international treaties that seek to limit the actions of nations. These treaties have utterly failed to curb genocide, war, and discord. There is a treaty which mandates signators to participate in a global effort against narcotics. This is one reason why there are still "officially" laws about cannibus in the Neatherlands. Efforts to pass a treaty prohibiting or limiting civilian ownership of small arms have been defeated in large part due to US objections. Global Warming is being used to push for global environmental legislation.
