World War II was supposedly a "Good War" in America's history.

In Europe, it involved the expansionist interests of Nazi Germany at the expense of Czechoslovakia, Poland, the Soviet Union, and other Eastern European countries. This was undesirable for France, United Kingdom, BeNeLux, several of the Scandinavian countries, and ultimately the United States, which wanted to establish itself as the unchallenged superpower in the Atlantic and a caretaker of a weak and fragmented Europe. The American moral standing in this war is rarely debated due to the atrocities committed by the Nazis, though a minority of historians alleges that history was re-written by the victors, with all Communist massacres blamed on the Germans and victim counts being overestimated for propaganda purposes.

Th Asia, it involved the expansionist interests of Imperial Japan at the expense of Korea, China, Philippines, Malaysia, and other East Asian nations. This was undesirable for the United States, which wanted to establish itself as the unchallenged superpower in the Pacific. The American moral standing in this war is open to debate, especially taking into account its prior imperial interests in the region, its role in decline of China and the rise of Japan, and the numerous provocations that took place prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor.
