Vietnam War
In order to stop the spread of communism into the former French Indochina region, the United States intervened in the civil war in Vietnam between the Communists in the North, and the non-Communists in the South. Approximately 60,000 US forces died during the conflict in the 1960's and the 1970's.
The war initially ended in 1973 with the Paris Peace Accords, which Richard Nixon's B-52 Christmas Bombing Campaign against Hanoi had forced the North Vietnamese to sign. The Paris Peace Accords said essentially that North Vietnam would remain communist, South Vietnam would remain non-communist, and that North Vietnam would stop trying to take over South Vietnam. Nixon put teeth into the Accords by promising to send the B-52's back to Hanoi if North Vietnam violated them. The antiwar traitors' friends in Congress, however, took the teeth out of the Paris Peace Accords by passing the Case-Church amendment, which barred any further US military involvement in Vietnam, including sending the bombers back to Hanoi if North Vietnam. There was nothing that Nixon could do to stop Case-Church because the amendment had a veto-proof majority. Once Case-Church passed, it was only a matter of time before North Vietnam broke the agreement and the Communists overran the South.
The "domino theory" that communism would spread from Vietnam to other nations Southeast Asia turned out to be right. Communists, emboldened by the communist victory in Vietnam, immediately took over two other nations in the former French Indochina region, Laos and Cambodia.
