Started Redesign

I've started work on redesigning the main page. The basic philosiphy that I'm following is to modularize everything. The left hand column will be the main content with archive stuff on the right. (I just noticed after three hours of working on this that I've got my left and right screwed up!!) Please note that I have hard coded the width of the right hand column at 300px Argash 03:30, 27 March 2006 (Eastern Standard Time)

Ok I've finished up most of the major design elements (still need to add the amp archive section to the right column). Feel free to start making recomendations. I'll continue to tweak minor stuff throughout the night as well. Also Eventually I want to start a featured article section below the current show notes but that will require an infistructure that I don't want to implement right now. If someone else wants to take a look at how wikipedia does their FA nomination process and adapt it for FTL then be my guest. Honestly I think we can do something a bit simpler than them. My 1/50th of a federal reserve note

I think it looks great in general; I made a small change (I don't think this website can call itself an encyclopedia - I've tried a number of times to get people to organize behind an encyclopedia of liberty but they refuse to because of the minimum content requirements. Apparently you can't ask a bunch of libertarians to voluntarily give up some freedom ever, but I digress.) I really like the way the categories came out - that looks damn good. I do have a problem with the space available to the show though. Check out how it renders on my browser: screen shot. The space available is so small as to look broken. I've got a 1024x768 screen so its not like I'm in the dark ages of web browsing; I think its just trying to shove too much stuff into not enough room. That might be a safari thing. I've tested it at 1024x768 in both FireFox and IE and it looks fine. I'd give you a screen shot but im on dual monitors here at the house and i don't feel like taking the time to disable a monitor, shrink the screen, take the screen shot, save it, enable the other monitor and then re-increase my screen size :p Argash 11:55, 27 March 2006 (Eastern Standard Time)
It still doesn't look right in Firefox on OS X too - I even have a smaller font size in firefox and there still isn't enough room for that part to render out right. How small is your font? Triddle 12:00, 27 March 2006 (Eastern Standard Time)

I'll second the "It looks great in general" from Triddle. Here are a couple of screen shots of what it looks like to my system using Firefox[[1]] and using Mozilla[[2]]. -- WinstonWolf 19:00 EST, 27Mar2006

Please hold on the move

I just realized that the front page is supposed to be protected so only the sysops can edit it, but it hasn't been in quite a while. I'd rather leave it unprotected until it becomes a problem since asking the admins to make any change is fairly annoying for all parties involved. As such, can you wait to move it to the front page until some positive feedback comes in? At this time I know I wouldn't move this page in. Triddle 12:15, 27 March 2006 (Eastern Standard Time)

Yea like I said I was going to give it atleast 24-48 hours before I did anything. Also please see my note concerning security below. Argash 12:42, 27 March 2006 (Eastern Standard Time)
I think it would be wise to get approval on your changes (rather than just assuming that lack of responses is approval). I can see this causing some hot water. Triddle 12:48, 27 March 2006 (Eastern Standard Time)
I agree. The sandbox page looks very cluttered to me, but I can't think of any ways of fixing it (design is not my forte). There's absolutely no reason why we need to rush. --Rabidfurby 02:39, 28 March 2006 (Eastern Standard Time)
Heh guess you posted this as I was doing it. Like I said on the main page discussion If no one like it we can always revert. Argash 03:09, 28 March 2006 (Eastern Standard Time)

On the issue of security

In reguards to what Triddle said above concerning security, I want to point out that the modular design makes it abit harder for people to vandalise as they would have to dig into the sub pages to doing anything truely negative Argash 12:41, 27 March 2006 (Eastern Standard Time)

Actually it makes it easier - its a matter of "trust" as it were. The front page is protected so people don't decide they want to write "LIBERTARIANS ARE NAZIS LOLZ0R!!!!!!!" on it. With all the inclusions, all someone has to do is go to a lower level included and unprotected page, put their nonsense in there, and it will show up on the front page, even if it is protected. Wikipedia actually goes through and protects every page that will be included on their front page before it happens. Security through obscurity is not security at all but I think the fact that the front page lived with out protection for this long says something. Triddle 12:47, 27 March 2006 (Eastern Standard Time)
