Social Security in a United States social program, designed mainly to provide payments to the elderly. It is also known as the Old Age, Survivors and Disability Insurance program (OASDI), in reference to its three components, and Socialist Insecurity within the freedom movement. In 2004, it paid out almost $500 billion in benefits. The U.S. Social Security program is the largest government program in the world. However, the liabilities arising from Social Security benefits are surpassed by Medicare (Senior healthcare).
In 2005, the possibility of changing the Social Security system became a major political issue. However, given the loss of political capital by the Bush administration, changes seem unlikely. Historically, Social Security has been called the "third rail" of US politics, meaning that like the electrified rail used to power some trains, it will kill you if you touch it.
