Slavery is involuntary servitude, often at the threat of force.
The practice of slavery is a very ancient one. Widespread condemnation of it has only really existed in contemporary times. The most prominent form of slavery in history was the African trans-Atlantic slave trade. Millions of Africans were shipped from Africa to the New World, initially as a result of a shortage of labor in the Americas. European countries outlawed the slave trade and slavery in the 19th century.
