Second Life is an online 3-D virtual world where the users can purchase virtual land, create and sell items, and interact with other users. As the name suggests, it's quite simply a second, virtual life. It is free to join and create an avatar as well as other objects, however there is a monthly cost to own land in the world.

Economy

Second Life has an in-game currency called Linden dollars, which poses some interesting opportunities and questions. The currency can be exchanged for U.S. dollars and apparently some people make a decent living by making and selling items in the virtual world. There are also in-game casinos and there is some speculation about how long that will remain, given the recent crackdown on online gambling.

Libertarian presence

There is a Free State group within the game as well as a Libertarian group. One FTL listener has purchased some land and set up the "Gimme Liberty Bar" where FTL streams live. This provides an interactive way to listen to the show, similar to a chat room (but with 3-D avatars). There are also video screens for watching liberty-oriented videos.
