History
PetMeats.com was founded by Joseph Boner in early 2004. Perceiving an increased demand for exotic meats, he opened it as an attempt to capitalize on the fad in a unique way.
Success
The company has grown tremendously, and now employs several thousand workers in the United States and Canada.
Controversy
In the middle of 2005, PETA staged nationwide protests against the alleged horrific practices of the company. The PetMeats.com Factory Outlet was broken into, and slightly outdaded pet carcasess were strewn around town. An agreement was reached with PETA shortly thereafter, and now operates in partnership with the company to oversee production.
Acquisition by Amazon.com
PetMeats.com, LLC was bought out by Amazon.com in late 2006 for $126.4 billion in cash and stock. All fulfillment operations are now carried out at their Coffeyville, KS distribution facility. Butchering operations are still done at various PetMeats.com plant locations. Joseph Boner chose to remain on as CEO, and receives a salary of 99 cents a year (na na na boo boo, Steve Jobs!) along with stock options.
