Common name for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Mormons believe that the the founder of the church, Joseph Smith, was visited by God the Father and Jesus Christ. They believe that has was later instructed by Angels, one of whom directed him to find an ancient book of gold plates inscribed with a historical account of the peoples of the Americas. Those plates are said to have been translated to be the Book of Mormon, named after the prophet of the second to last section of the book. A character in the Book of Mormon is a man called Mormon, who directed his son to bury the book for future generations. Mormon's son, Moroni, is supposed to be one of the angels; the one that showed Joseph Smith where to find the plates of gold. Each Mormon temple has a gold colored statue of the angel Moroni on it's tallest spire.
