Minarchism on Wheels!

Minarchists are people who believe in very small government. They are one of the two broad categories of libertarians, the other being anarcho-capitalists.

Differences of opinion amongst minarchists

Minarchists, as libertarians, believe that government should be limited to upholding rights to the person and property. But they sometimes differ as to what functions should be under the state's remit.

Most would accept a state run armed forces, police and judicial system. Some (like Mark) believe that the roads and money supply should be administered by the state.

Criticisms of minarchism

Some believe that minarchism is a contradictory philosophy. Libertarians, by definition, oppose the initiation of force or fraud against the person or property. In order for a state to fund itself, it would have to tax people. Since taxation is theft, this amounts to an initiation of force. The existence of ANY government, in itself, amounts to force against the individual. Some libertarians argue that anarcho-capitalism is the only logically consistent form of libertarian belief.
