Once Law was sitting on the bench,
       And Mercy knelt a-weeping.
"Clear out!" he cried, "disordered wench!
       Nor come before me creeping.
Upon your knees if you appear,
'Tis plain your have no standing here."

Then Justice came. His Honor cried:
"Your status? -- devil seize you!"
   "Amica curiae," she replied --
"Friend of the court, so please you."
"Begone!" he shouted -- "there's the door --
I never saw your face before!"

Definition

Rules upheld by the state designed to promote and maintain order in society. The first legal code in the common sense was Hammurabi's Code of Laws in ancient Babylon.

Libertarian values on law

Libertarians reckon that laws should only safeguard self-ownership and hence rights to person and property. In an anarcho-capitalist society, laws would operate on the free market. Different agencies would compete in making laws, based upon public and consumer demand.
