Overview
Kelo vs. New London was a Supreme Court case decided in 2005 concerning eminent domain. It centered around the New London Development Corp. of New London, CT trying to take property from several homeowners, including Suzette Kelo. The property would then have been sold to the pharmaceutical company Pfizer which would have built a research & development facility on the land. The case was eventually heard by the Supreme Court, who decided 5-4 that local governments could take land from private owners and sell or lease the property to other private entities, as long as the new owner would provide more tax revenue for the government than the previous owner.
