Government as a concept

Government is a system of creating rules for society and enforcing them. Since control is by nature the opposite of freedom, anarchy and specifically anarcho-capitalism are advocated by some as a way to maximize personal freedoms. Anarchists typically characterize the violent nature of government by describing it as a "roaming band of thugs", while those who support government describe it as a necessary evil for keeping society under control.

Layers of government

The government in the United States is typically separated onto several layers based on locality and scope.

Local government

Depending on the region, may include both the municipal (town / city / county / borough) and the county government.

State government

Some people theorize that multinational agreements like the European Union and North American union, as well as international organizations like the United Nations are evolving into a world government that will be able to control the entirety of the human civilization.
