The aim of this layout guide is to provide an easy, uniform experience for navigating through the episode show notes articles on the wiki.

Naming convention

Episode page names should be in the format: FTL YYYY-MM-DD.

Layout

Minimum requirements

  • At the very top of the page should be the FTL Episode template. Refer to the template page for documentation.
  • If the article is either missing the episode topics or is a future episode, add the EpStub template after the FTL Episode template.
  • Add a level 2 headline: == Topics ==
  • Add a level 3 headline for each hour of the episode in this format: === Hour 1 ===, === Hour 2 ===, and === Hour 3 ===
  • Add episode topics under each hour using numbered list wiki markup.
    • e.g. # The government screws up again
    • Use correct capitalization. Ian is notorious for Capitalizing Words That He Shouldn't in the episode topics.
  • Add external news and article source links after the topic, without link text, to generate numbered links.
    • e.g # The government screws up again
  • Categorize the page, in the format: YYYY-MM, piped to a space character for sorting
    • e.g.

Example

EpStub

Topics
Hour 1
Hour 2
Hour 3
Extras

Notes

If there are any important notes about the episode, add a level 2 heading for notes (== Notes ==) above "Topics".

Episodes which do not air for some reason (such as the hosts moving to New Hampshire, or at a radio convention) should still have an article with an appropriate notes section. Leave off the Topics section for such pages, obviously.

Quotes

If there are any notable (poignant, humorous, or otherwise) quotes, add a level 2 heading for quotes (== Quotes ==), usually above "Topics".

References

This is a future improvement

The current version of MediaWiki software we are running does not allow easy citation of references, but when it is eventually upgraded, a references section should be included to cite source names, authors, date, and accessed date.

Co-host categories

Episodes with regular co-hosts should be added to the "Shows with Name" category.

Episode cleanup

If the episode does not meet the minimum requirements listed above, the episode cleanup template should be added at the top of the page. This does not need to be added for future episodes or episodes with the EpStub template.

The episode cleanup template will add the article to Category:All pages needing cleanup and Category:Episodes needing cleanup. Once an episode has been cleaned up to meet the minimum requirements, the episode template can be removed.

Here are some other considerations for article cleanup:

  • Month topic pages are deprecated and links to them should be changed to links to the month's category.
    • e.g. April 2006 Topics to :Category: 2006-04
  • Episode air dates should not be wiki linked
  • Wiki links to pages that do not exist yet should follow the naming conventions.
    • e.g. free market not Free Market
