The free market (or laissez-faire capitalism) is the idea that the economy should not be interfered with by the government, because voluntary actions increase prosperity faster than violent intervention. Most Libertarians support free markets. In earlier days (1800's), Democrats supported free markets, while the Republicans were supporters of protectionism. Later, American Liberalism overtook Classical Liberalism, and the free market Democrats switched to the Republican party, making them increasingly moderate. From the 1930's Until the 1990's most Republicans supported free markets, but resumed their mercantilist ways with the Republican Revolution of 1994.
