"Dr." Gene Ray is a conspiracy theorist and the self-proclaimed "world's smartest human." He is known for developing the theory of the Time Cube.
The crew did an hour straight with him on Friday October 7, 2005 – without laughing. The interview with Dr. Ray was, arguably, the FTL crew's finest hour of broadcasting to date; demonstrating powerfully that some Americans have indeed been "educated stupid". Even months after hearing the show some listeners have been known to laugh uncontrollably in public places at the memory of Ian's earnest querying of Dr. Ray's theories.
More astute FTL fans were able to understand the treatment of Gene Ray by Ian and Mark was entirely in jest. However one or two emailed in out of confusion.
On Saturday February 16, 2008 he was on the show again, though Ian explained beforehand to the audience that they were having a bit of fun and "playing roles" with him.
