History
Canada was formed by the 1867 Constitution Act, which was an Act of the United Kingdom Parliament.
Geography
Canada is the country second largest country in the world. It's located everywhere in the north of the United States. Canada and the United States have the longest non-defended border in the world.
Politics
As a consequence of its British heritage, Canada has a parliamentary system of government. It also, like the United States, has a federal structure. The head of state in Canada is the British sovereign, who currently is Queen Elizabeth II. She is represented in the country by a Governor-General, who is appointed by the Prime Minister.
The Constitution states that the executive branch is the Queen's Privy Council led by the Governor-General. However, the Prime Minister is the de facto and actual source of executive power in the country.
In the latest January 2006 election, Canada has changed its government to the Conservative Party of Canada, after 13 years of Liberal rule. Canadians have elected a minority government, which means that the opposition parties have more seats combined than the government. The opposition parties are the Liberal Party of Canada (leftist-centrist), which currently has no official leader after former PM Paul Martin's resigned after the last election, the New Democractic Party (socialist), the Bloc Québécois (Quebec separatists), the Green Party and one independant MP, André Arthur, a french-canadian talk-show radio host.
Secession Movements
Due to their proximity to New Hampshire, the long-standing secession movement in Québec, as well as milder movements in the Maritime Provinces (i.e. New Acadia) may be of particular interest to the Free State Project members.
