Ayn Rand (February 2, 1905 - March 6, 1982) was the author of Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead, among other fiction and non-fiction works. She was the founder of a new philosophy which she called Objectivism.

Her novel Atlas Shrugged was very influential in the development of the modern libertarian movement, and remains so to this day. It is the "second most influential book for Americans today" after the Bible, according to a joint survey conducted by the Library of Congress.
